Document Summary
Microbial diseases of the gi tract are the 2nd most common cause of human illness in north america. Vast majority result from the ingestion of food or water contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms or their toxins. Typically pathogens enter the food or water supply after being shed in the feces of ppl or animals. In most developed countries, cycle of transmission is interrupted by effective sanitation practices: food production & handling, sewage treatment, disinfection of drinking water. Breakdowns in these processes can occur and cause widespread infections. While camping, drank water from a stream (boiled it first) 2wks later presents with: watery diarrhea, abdo distension, foul-smelling stool, flatulence, belching, abdominal cramps.
