Document Summary

Histology: the study of tissues - connective tissues. Abundant: found in every organ, lls in gaps. Consists of cells separated by extracellular matrix: composition makes di erent types. Many diverse types: bone (has calcium) and blood (has water) Enclose organs as a capsule: protection, connection, nerves have connective tissue surrounding them, also acts as a barrier. Connect tissues to one another (ligaments: bone-bone, tendons: muscle-bone) Transport (blood - horomones, lymphatic system - immune responses) Fine/thin collagenous strands, form branching networks/web/mesh: elastic: returns to its original shape after distension or compression. Contain molecules of protein elastin that resemble coiled springs; molecules are cross- linked; structure allows for elastic property, too many cross-links lose stretch. Connective tissue: loose: fewer bers, more ground substance. In lecture usually refers to areolar: dense: more bers, less ground substance. Regular (protein bres same direction) or irregular (di erent direction) collagenous. Loose packing material of most organs and tissues, lls any hole not a cavity.
