Sensory function: smell: two neuron system: Specialized receptors in nasal cavity detect chemicals in the air; create electrical signal. Brought to and synapses at olfactory bulb. Transmit information through olfactory tract to temporal lobe: originates in cerebrum. Retina turns light information to electrical impulses. Optic nerves join together at optic chiasm. Impulse then moves down optic tract to occipital lobe. Parasympathetic motor - pupil constriction (smooth muscle) Motor function: movement of the eyeball (single muscle) Trochlea: connective tissue, pulley to redirect line of pull. Only cranial nerve to carry sensory information from the skin. Covers the 3 regions of the face. Ophthalmic: sensory function: upper facial structures. Maxillary: sensory function: middle facial structures. Mandibular: sensory function: lower facial structures & anterior to ear; motor. Motor function: movement of the eyeball (one muscle)
