Document Summary
Unions and democracy: basic theory of democracy. Economy and democracy going back to the ancient greeks and the 20th century, there was understood to be a clear connection to economy and democracy. Too much inequality with citizenship, democracy was going to be hard because some citizens can buy off others, or were economically insecure. Citizens wont make good/free/fair decisions, too easily vulnerable. The idea is now that all citizens/general public should have democratic rights. Engaged citizenry citizens must have a level of knowledge and attention paid to the decisions that affect them. Not just about voting, about being involved in the decision making along the way. Especially, citizens need institutions/organizations to keep them engaged: industrial democracy in the 20th century, people were really concerned about democracy. It was only north america, and australia that followed democracy. Within the workplace/industry a certain amount of democracy was going to be given to workers.
