An idea that was born in opposite to business unionism. Gompers believed you needed to keep members engaged. He thought being a good business union meant hiring good staff who know how the industry worked and you used them to do the big major work. Trust staff to take care of certain issues. You trust executives to take care of bargaining. We are going to go beyond and be broader. Not simply going to be focused on narrow things. Anti economistic means you do not narrowly focus on your own contract/wages. Will look at where unions are not just about wages/contract. We want to regain this image that we have had before to fight for justice. We will deal with issues that are not just union issues. New social movements that come along in the 60s (last lecture) social unionism is clearly an attempt to connect unions more to the social movements.
