Document Summary

Merges of 1950s ccf stuck in third place, and people go back to this idea of merging politics with labour. A lot of the industrial sector become closer to the ccf"s ideas. Idea that they should have a formal alliance between labour and the ccf. This picks up steam after the afl and cio merge. Gompers thinking about politics was strong in the afl, however they had merged with a political group. So people recognized that ideas were changing, and people were beginning to move forward past old ideas. A lot of the ideas of nationalizing, government control, etc that the ccf had initially they dropped. Mostly a set of long term, election promises/reforms during the election because they want to appeal to the broader sector of the workforce, and the electorate. Also don"t want to be accused of being communist, so they change their ideas. Want to appeal to as many union people, and potential voters as possible.
