Document Summary

A lot of the factory work in global south is sweatshop labour; violating certain work standards (long hours, low pay, etc. ) Labour standards might be met in these, but there are certain characteristics that make it a problem. Epzs are large factory areas in countries. Mass consumer goods are produced: anything from electronics, to cut flowers, to clothing. Argument in favour of epzs and ftzs is that they increase the amount of jobs available, and that investment is encouraged in ftzs because there aren"t many trade barriers in these factory areas. A lot of this work is done in the home and subcontracted to larger factories (esp. garment work) However, most factory work in global south is done with low pay, long hours, repetitive work (incentive to keep wages down) Factory zones have enormous spatial significance (b/c they"re areas of work for large numbers of people, but also b/c they have large social and environmental consequences: sometimes called industrial parks.
