Ymca becomes really important to spreading sports like basket ball to lower-classes, and. Almost from the start theres girls/ women"s basketball. Basketball was an indoor sport, so women could play the sport in an enclosed area without men watching. Two trajectories: the sport is spreading through elite universities, but also through the ymca where low-class, sometimes radicalized kids play. Different ymcas would play against each other (urban competition for primarily working class participants) Several leagues started and folded between late 1890s and 1950s. More lasting were barnstorming" teams: new york rens, harlem globetrotters = best example of barnstorming" teams. They don"t compete in a league but people will pay to see these elite athletes play against their local teams. Nbl (1937) - end of depression prior to the war, and baa (1946) Nba: owned by industry / industrial league in midwest, owned by big companies, mid-level midwestern markets, wagner model: unions are happening and legal.
