By 1970 talk of aba merging w nba. Nba expanding, but selective, favouring large markets and cities, a conservative league. Aba created with the intent to merge with the nba: aba and nba teams played exhibition games and a combined all-star game. Increased player movement and created upward pressure on salary. Merger was blocked by robertson vs. nba anti-trust lawsuit until 1976: result: free agency with right of first refusal for incumbent team. Four teams (denver nuggets, indiana pacers, new york nets, san antonio spurs) merged with nba. Located in canadian cities and mid-size us markets spurned by nhl. Offered several nhl players massive raises to jump ship. Challenged nhl over use of reserve clause: wha never used reserve clause. Wha more active than nhl in recruiting europeans.
