LABRST 3A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Absenteeism
Document Summary
The low wages and undesirable working conditions may in turn create high absenteeism and turnover, which further depress wages in the secondary labour market. Prejudice of the dominant group prevent the entry of woman into the primary market: unions, occupations licensing, discriminatory employment tests, barriers to education and training. Females may underestimate their own labour market worth, and tend to ask for low wages. The canadian data show that females dominate non-standard employment (ex/ regular part-time, temporary full-time, temporary part-time employment) Women differ from men in their acquired capital endowment due to: shorter expected length of labour market participation which, in turn, reduces, their level of experience, higher turnover rate, higher absenteeism, differences in household responsibilities.
