In science, you need objective way to measure behaviour so others can do that as well. Thus pavlov showed us the imp of neutral stimuli in the envt, and given the right pairing, this stimulus can be very imp from a biological perspective. Through his studies with dogs, he saw that a digestive response (production of saliva) occurs when a bell is heard in the envt.
