Document Summary

Vitamin a is fat soluble with precursors from a group called carotenoids (main form: -carotene) Three acive forms (reinoids): reinol, reinal, reinoic acid: cleaving b-carotene yields 2 vitamin a molecules (someimes cleaving can shit so that it only yields one vitamin a molecule) Roles in the body: regulated gene expression, vision (reinal, protein synthesis and cell difereniaion (reinol) majority in epithelium, reinol major transport and storage form of vitamin a. Absorbed by lymphaic system bypass liver iniially because fat soluble vitamin. Reinol-binding protein (rbp): carries carries vitamin a from liver in the blood used for vision, cell difereniaion, etc: receptors for rbp are found on cells that require vitamin a. Protein synthesis and cell difereniaion: vitamin a protects skin from sun damage and integrity of mucous membranes (epithelial cells inside body) + promotes difereniaion of epithelial and goblet cells which secrete mucus that protects cells.
