It is about the use of language for the purpose of communication. This course introduces students to the field of discourse analysis. We shall investigate a variety of styles and registers of communication, from the conversational to the literary and academic. You will learn about theoretical approaches to textual analysis; read the coursepack. You will do your own mini research projects on a variety of language uses in modern society; You will analyze their form and function. Body language, facial expression, don"t have to say anything (silence), smile, wink, not only words: in image of powerpoint, there is a speaker/author and hearer/reader. What are the properties of texts: words, style, metaphors, emotions, body language, images, intentions. Communication can be oral or written: verbal still using words, so both spoken and written is verbal. You can communicate through the sense of smell or taste.
