Protective function is the most important role of the larynx. Prevents entrance of foreign objects into the lungs: entrance of foreign objects is life-threatening. Larynx protects us from foreign objects by: coughing: forceful evacuation of respiratory passageway in response to irritant or foreign matter, throat clearing: clears respiratory tract of mucus. Stiffer the object is the better it is, it responds to vibrations: inertia: a body in motion tends to stay in motion. If you push something out of shape, it continues until the other factors take over and pushes the form over. Periodic waveform: repeats itself in a predictable fashion: vocal folds open and close - it repeats itself, anything that is repeated then we talk about periodic waveform (we have one cycle, and that cycle repeats) Cycle: one point in a vibratory pattern to the same point again, time measured in milliseconds or seconds (ms, s) Period: time to complete one cycle of vibration.
