Document Summary

Every interventional procedure will have a preset protocol for patient prep before the exam, but some things are constant: Key elements to ensure proper patient prep: evaluation: may require screening tests based on patient history, clotting studies - function of plasma protein in forming clots. Ptt: partial thromboplastin time - intrinsic system (proteins interacting to form the blots) Pt: prothrombin time - extrinsic system (tissue factors are stimulated via trauma - proteins synthesized to make clots as a result of a puncture, incision, etc) Pt test is the patients numbers, pt normal is a normalized/standard value. Patient has clinical evidence of a coagulopathy (impairment in ability to form clots) Patient has a disease that is known to impair clotting process (ie liver disease, certain cancers) Patient is receiving medication that affects clotting process (ie blood thinners, heparin, warfarin) Patient has a history of conditions that affect blood cell production or consumption.
