When a family member is facing a life-threatening illness, all members of the family are affected & adjustments in the usual roles & responsibilities within the family result. The journey affects the person, the family, & all who are involved in the person"s life & death. The focus in hospice palliative care is on the person & on individual family members. A life-limiting illness alters roles in the family ie) the ill person may not be able to manage activities of daily living or engage in the workplace. Ability to see one"s self as contributing &/or independent. Family have always cared for ill family members but expectation placed on caregivers today is much more complicated than in the past. Family caregivers provide for the needs of most long term & medically complex family members for months/years. Most of these caregivers are themselves middle aged or older - most are women.
