An area of study that deals with ideas about what is good & bad behaviour. Can also be a situation in the hospital. Term is used interchangeably (bioethics or medical ethics) Bioethics is typically controversial ethics brought about by advances in biology & medicine. Bioethicists do the following: collect to a plethora of facts. Uses reports & publications as part of discussion. Physician behaviours (medical ethics) with patients has been around since hippocrates 460 bc - 370 bc. 1962: life magazine article on seattle artificial kidney program. 1975: the national commission for the protection of human subjects of biomedical & behavioural research. Kidney dialysis - deciding who got the treatment. Initially no criteria, ppl with no medical background choosing ppl. We now have criteria to determine who gets the treatment. At the time no one to debate/contribute to public deliberation. The tuskegee syphilis study (1932-1972, macon county alabama) 1932: tuskegee institute worked with the public health service.
