Implies an unlimited right to patients being a moral autonomous agent. Four conditions must be present in order for consent to treatment to be valid: consent must be related to treatment. Ppl need to give consent for treatment, long term care, & services after discharge from hospital. Family involvement & substitute decision makers are asked: consent must be informed, consent must be voluntary - willingly agreeing, not coerced; deciding through own decision making; voluntary & You are invited should always be included when asking someone to be a subject in research. Need to tell them how to withdraw if they feel the need to. Need to tell them what happens to their data when they withdraw: consent must not be obtained through fraud or misrepresentation. Right to govern his or her own affairs. Acknowledge individuals to live life by own values. Person who makes decisions for you needs to decide based on your life values, not their own.
