Multimedia lecture 15: friday november 4, 2016: type size. The proportion of the x-height to the point size significantly affects the appearance of type. Average reading distance 12-14 inches with type with type sizes at 9-12pt varying x-heights change this. Small type reduces counter forms and wrecks patterns, but also can create shapes and textures to draw you in, code information. Large type causes more fixation pauses, breaks flow, patterns, yet can draw attention. Weight: used to create contrast for emphasis, comprehension, clarity: colour: Typographic colour- relative shade or tonal value that results from the effects of decisions made in interline (leading, vertical space), word and letter spacing, qualities of typeface, type size etc. Important in establishing hierarchy: horizontal space (interword spacing, wordspacing, letterspacing) The space between words is derived from the rhythm of the strokes and counters established by the letterspacing itself. If the eye cannot hold the line of type, communication is destroyed.
