Just because they"re defined by dates doesn"t mean the time periods have concrete start and stop times very fluid. They blend/bleed into each other mr. alfano said something about this once: prelude 2: the culture of the middle ages and renaissance (476-1450) Not just musical composition, but art and literature. Once you get into the renaissance, this changes. Church is responsible for the creation of art and music at the time.
