Fell into oblivion afterwards (like bach: mostly known today for opera, music for harpsichord. Interesting: did not compose first opera until he was nearly 50: and then he ended up revolutionizing what the french thought about opera, created a new genre of operatic composition, wrote a book on music theory. Was a result of a variety of factors; changing music tastes, changing styles, other things: rediscovered in the 20th c. There are special music festivals devoted to his music. Taught by church musicians monks (early) Italian education came later his father made sure of this.
