Document Summary
One of the earliest internationally known american composers. Borrowing from different musical styles / idioms. Brings in something from one section and puts it into another section. His nal task at yale was to compose a symphony. The symphony sounded like his contemporaries at the time. His father was george ives > band master. Charles heard lots of band music growing up. Struggled as a professional musician so he taught charles about experimental music. Charles worked as an organist at a small church in conneticut. Worked as a choirmaster, but then nds a job in nyc, at the central presbyterian. Then he decides that he shouldn"t be a professional musician. But he still kept composing in his spare time, thus he was in this musical bubble since he didn"t have the opportunity to discuss with other composers. Stopped composing in 1918 because of his deteriorating health. Works were only recognized towards the end of his life.
