Document Summary

Visual arts movement of the late 19th century and early 20th century: applied the colour in dabs or dots, not streaks. From a distance these colours blur together: has a shimmering effect from afar. Focused on conveying an emotion or sensation: they did not represent a direct object, artists were trying to give us a moment in time. Impressionist painters: 1) claude monet, 2) pierre - auguste renoir, 3) edgar degas. Blurring of harmonies, rhythms + forms: we might not know where our home key is, there is no strong sense of pull from tonality. Composer explores multiple keys, or tries to avoid the hierarchy of keys in general: uid approach to rhythm and forms. Claude monet"s painting impression : some indication of blurry shapes, not a clear representation, dabs of colour create water, sky (only gives us an impression) Many critics at the time of impressionism.
