From a technical standpoint, one of the most important films of its period. On thin ice as its about the kkk and slavery in the south during civil war. Carli elinor= a music fitter, someone who picks music to assemble a score. Breil, american born, european trained musician and composer. Assembles a continuous score 2/3s similar to elinor, but original material written for the film. Music (dixie) was played by orchestra during silent films (different orchestras, different interpretations) Only solution to the different interpretations was to record sound with the movie. Sound and silent films existed together for several years. Talkies were seen as a fad, silent films continued to come out as silent. At this point, motion pictures have been around for 30 years. Demonstrations of sound films as early as 1922. Several competing systems emerge : phonofilm (1923)= (cid:838)sound on film(cid:839) system.
