The in between years was really this period where the major labels figured out how to make something that sounded like rock and roll, but do it with the division of labour system. One spot where the sound of the golden age actually survived: that was in california. Post war prosperity is the most keenly felt in california. California has always done well center of the western film and television industry, center of the worlds high tech industry, standards of living have always been fairly high. If you surf, you are almost certainly a member of the middle class (surfing is expensive its usually expensive to live near the ocean, surf boards cost money) Surfing is not the hobby of the working class, or the poor. Many of the artists of surf music came from middle class backgrounds (big difference from other artists of the golden age of rock and roll )
