MUSIC 2II3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Multitrack Recording, Newport Folk Festival, Soul Food
Document Summary
Formed in 1959 (around the same time as motown) - satellite records (stax records, 1961) Was similar to motown bc they used a house band. House band: brooker t and the mgs. Approach to recording - much more collective than motown. Did not use stereo recording everything was in monophonic, a single audio track. Did not use multi track unlike motown who did. Whatever had the best energy, whether or not it was musically perfect, Capturing the energy was more important than playing the song perfectly (this differed from motown where only perfect songs got out the door) Otis redding - (cid:873)try a little tenderness(cid:874) (cid:840)1966(cid:841) Originally a tpa song written in 1920s. Soul was a performance aesthetic - not just about how the song was made. Motown artists never sweat - sweat was seen as a loss of control. They were much more intense in their performances. Everyone played together - no multitrack recording.
