Prior to ww2, if you were in university, you were from a wealthy family even getting out of high school was signi cant. When you reach your late teens, you leave your home, come to university, you stop being a kid, and you start being a grown up. What is appropriate for you to be listening to as a young intellectual. End of the 1950s, now in university, many are looking for music that is more serious . Folk music- told tales, related important historical gures. Fold music as a professional genre has been around as long as music has been: but held an uncomfortable place. Folk= amateur, but not necessarily bad tradition not interested in innovation, self- consciousness, wanted to maintain established traditions.
