57 views6 pages

Document Summary

Music therapy and pain perception: people might have different pain thresholds which can be influenced by prior/learned experiences. What is pain: an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience. Typically, pain might not come to our mind as it is an emotional experience. Pain is subjective (different thresholds based on experience): the excitement for the outcome can heighten the threshold i. e. your emotional state of excitement can overcome the subjective experience of the pain of the needles when getting a tattoo. If you were a young child and were in and out of hospitals and had a painful experience, then getting a tattoo would be even worse! How can a music therapist reduce pain more than medicine alone: not suggesting that music therapy should replace medicine. Also, when we take a pill, it might impact nociception, but will not change our mood or our mind i. e. does not impact social or psychological aspect, only biological.
