Document Summary

Week 11: comfort measures- mobility (wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes) Body mechanics: coordinated efforts of the msk & ns to maintain balance, posture, & body alignment during lifting, bending, moving and performing adls. Being in correct body alignment means that the individual"s centre of gravity is stable. Correct body alignment reduces strain of msk structures, minimizes risk of injuries & falls, aids in maintaining adequate muscle tone, & contributes to balance. Deconditioning: clinical syndrome resulting in reduced function of multiple systems, especially msk. Falls are the 6th leading cause of death in older adults. Centre of gravity is usually 55%-57% of standing height and is located in the midline. Friction is a force that occurs in a direction to oppose movement. Larger the surface area of the object to be moved, greater the friction. Lifting has an upwards component that reduces friction. Pathological influences on mobility: congenital & acquired impairments, degenerative & episodic conditions, and disease affecting virtually every body system.
