Document Summary

Helps a patient breathe, important in patients with underlying pulmonary disease because of their risk for postoperative pneumonia. As effective as incentive spirometry, the use of an is in combination with coughing & other methods for lung expansion lowers rates of postoperative pneumonia. There are 2 types of is"s: flow oriented & volume oriented. Flow-oriented iss have one or more plastic chambers with freely movable, colored balls. As a patient inhales slowly, the balls are elevated to a premarked area. A patient"s goal is to keep the balls elevated for as long as possible to ensure maximal sustained inhalation. Volume-oriented devices use a bellows that a patient must raise to a predetermined volume by inhaling slowly. Some devices have a marker that moves up as a patient inhales. Instruct patient to exhale completely through mouth & place lips tightly around mouthpiece. Instruct patient to take a slow deep breath & maintain constant flow like pulling through a straw.
