Disconnection between thought and language; interference with the filtering of stimuli from the environment, which affects a person"s thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and overall behaviours. Occurs in about 1. 3% of the population in canada. Occurs in all countries and cultures; distributed amongst men and women, although there is a later onset of schizophrenia in women (estrogen is believed to be a protective factor and delays onset of symptoms) 10% of persons with schizophrenia will commit suicide. Schizophrenia = mixture of positive and negative symptoms that persist for a significant portion of a 1 month period but with continuous signs of disturbance persisting for at least 6 months. Two (or more) of the following, each present for a significant portion of time during a 1-month period (or less if successfully treated). At least one of these must be (1), (2), or (3: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, grossly disorganized or catatonic behaviour, negative symptoms. Continuous signs of disturbance for at least 6 months.
