They are organized movements towards peace (different from peace studies) April carter:3 aspects to define peace movements: its autonomous from a state or party, non-alignment with any state or military alliance, its adherence to nonviolence as methodology of action and protest (3 features of peace movements) Like peace , a peace movement is also difficult to define. Different types of peace movements: political or social movement, formal or informal, goal = negative peace (a clear goal, peace movements attend to obtain negative peace. In terms of war peace movements are : movements to eliminate war, movements to stop particular aspects of war (eg: conscription) or particular weapons (landmines, nuclear weapons, movements to stop particular wars (eg: vietnam war) Demonstrations, and national political lobbying groups to create legislation supporting anti-war political candidates lobbying legislation (eg to remove the profit from government contracts to the military, banning guns) creating open government and transparency supporting whistleblowers.
