PHILOS 1A03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Irony, Agathon, Penia
Document Summary
Agathon: artistry is the real proof of wisdom. Instead he refutes the previous speech of agathon: eros is not happy or beautiful. Those who desire are not happy for they are still wanting and longing. Eros (cid:373)ust (cid:374)ot (cid:271)e (cid:271)eautiful (cid:271)e(cid:272)ause he desires the (cid:271)eautiful a(cid:374)d he o(cid:374)l(cid:455) desires (cid:449)hat he does(cid:374)"t ha(cid:448)e. Realizes these speeches about eros are not really praises just for enjoyment. Socrates wants to be truthful in his appraisal of eros but he knows nothing true about eros. He then recounts a speech he heard years ago from diotima, a priestess. Father is poros, resource, makes him brave, impetuous. Mother is penia, poverty, makes him poor, course and without charm, thought shrived and homeless. Paternal grandmother is metis, cunning, makes him scheming (pursues beauty which he lacks) People to not want anything not even a soul mate unless they judge it to be good. Socrates did not understand this argument when he was longer.
