What socrates says to plato: opinions w/out knowledge are ugly and shameful things. * causes intellect to understand * causes beings to be. Knowledge: understanding why what is, is and must be as it is. Criterion of knowledge: infallibility, the impossibility of error. Inquiry that systematically attempts to grasp w/ respect to each thing itself what the being of it is , that is the idea. It overcomes everything hypothetical in thought and leads to presuppositionless knowledge. An allegory of: the human situation, the allegory of the cave, the life in the cave, life in shadows, life in imprisonment. People are all in caves and are prisoners to our senses as we rely on our experiences and assume instead of going out of the cave to explore the real world.
