This kind of cleansing of false beliefs was good. Plato says ^ is search for true definitions of virtues. Thrasymachus (well known sophist) doesn"t think that an idea is just a virtue. Says those who are most powerful have seized control of the state, that they make the laws so that the laws reflect their values and serve their interests. ^real challenge to socrates" method since he"s always starting w/ interlocutor"s beliefs. But these may only reflect ruling class values. Elenchus may not uncover what virtues are, but what ppl think they are.
