According to lockeans, i and most fundamentally a personl a self-conscious, rational being with a first person perspective on the world. I remain in existence o long as there are the right kinds of psychological connections linking me now to me in the past. According to animalists, i am most fundamentally a human being, that is, a kind of animal. I remain in existence so long as my body remains alive. If all of my brain were destroyed except my brain stem, my body could survive and remain the same biological organism with the same life. If all of my brain were destroyed except for my brain stem, i would not survive. Therefore, the conditions under which i survive are not the same as those under which my body survives and remains the same biological organism with the same life.
