Document Summary

Plato"s republic is his second longest work and is considered a middle dialogue. The republic covers a range of topics including justice, politics, ethics, metaphysics and epistemology. Plato sets up a model city and argues that philosophical education will be crucial to the flourishing of that city. Our discussion of plato"s republic picks up just after plato has stated that the rulers must know what the good is so they do not mistakenly pursue what is not good. Socrates says he cannot directly speak about the good at the moment, but can talk about the offspring of the good. He says can answer directly, indirectly: many instances of things like many beautiful things and the forms of things, forms are intelligible and invisible. Recall the distinction between beautiful things etc and the beautiful itself . Setting this up to talk about the good. The form of the good is like the sun.
