Document Summary

Is there really a reason why i should act in the ways in which hitherto i have thought i ought to act? . ***note: we are not studying sociological concepts (social experiments - ie: bystander effect) Ie: by being kind, i will be more well-liked, have more friends. Intrinsic goods: those we welcome for their own sake, not for what follows after them (ie: joy, harmless pleasure, etc) Intrinsic and instrumental goods: those we welcome both for their own sake and what follows from them (ie: knowing, being healthy, etc) Instrumental goods: those we welcome only for what follows from them (ie: medical treatment, exercise, etc) According to glaucon, morality is an instrumental good. Morality as a social contract: people agree to system of rules to prohibit injustice (because benefit in being safe from injustice outweighs benefit of people able to commit injustice) One is moral in order to avoid bad consequences/punishment.
