Lecture 5 Wednesday September 12
2 steps taking place taking in info and making interpretations
Tolman and Honzik Rats latent learning is more powerful than reward training
o The rats that were rewarded on trial 11 did better than those that were rewarded every
single time
o The group of rats that were never given a reward but started to get reward ex. after 17
would learn through latent learning
Perceiving the world
o We see the world in terms of meaningful objects
o The visual stimulus that our brain receives does not consist of objects
o Stimulus projects on retina and gives a 2D representation of different colours and
intensities of light
Perception is not equal to sensation
o Therefore a lot of processing needs to be done, and
assumptions need to be made by our perceptual system
o Visual input needs to be organized
o Our perception goes beyond the info given
Specificity of Neurons in the Visual System
o Different kinds of neurons have different receptive fields
o Ex. line orientation, edge detection, center-surround,
direction of movement
Hubel and Weisel
o Light bar was stimulus projected on screen
o Single-cell recording
Center-Surround Cells
