Someone to perceive to have the right to provide information. But they are people too, they could have an agenda, to which you shouldn"t always trust what they say. Empirical thinking is a skill that must be taught. Most people are likely to use other, less reliable, forms of thinking such as anecdotal evidence, intuition and trusting authorities. Therefore, the information they gather (even from empiricists) is unlikely to be the whole story. Theory --> hypothesis --> prediction --> data --> theory. A baby feels safe and comforted by their mother"s presence - they need their mother. Behaviourist approach - cupboard theory (wants to be around mother to satisfy hunger) Harlow"s rebuttal - contact comfort theory (engaged in a sensitive intimate interaction with mother - not just food) Harlow tested contact comfort theory against theory. Had baby monkeys interact with two surrogate mother monkey - one which wasn"t comfortable but had food, the other didn"t have food but was comfortable.
