Many states identify as democratic but differ from us ( north korea) Wars in rina and afghanistan were justified saying they were going over to create democracy. Two kets types of democracy - direct democracy and indirect democracy. Citizens (not professional politicians) directly make the rules and regulations governing society. Eg. ancient athens - the model of direct democracy, assembly made decisions, every citizen was a member, would show up, make decisions, vote. As long as they were a greek citizen (doesn"t matter poor, rich, etc) Council to decide what matters would be discussed (randomly selected to the council) Need professionals who know what their doing. Referendum (only three in canada) ( gov asks the citizens) Voter initiative ( issue citizen is interested, creates a petition, enough means gov has to do something about it) ( not valid @ the federal level) recall. Ancient athens - reality of direct democracy was less than democratic for anyone other than male citizens.
