Search upward until 1962, there is a cresting and then a decline, democracies overthrown by military dictatorship (chile and argentina) Most dramatic and longest lasting wave, portugal, greece, spain, all become democratic. Massive political transformations in south america, africa etc. Most dramatic transformation would have to be the eastern europe and soviet union transformation in the late 80"s-early 90"s (implodes in 1991) There is currently (past 15 years) a stable amount of democracies.
