Definition: liberalism from liber meaning, free , liberalism concerned above all else with freedom and how to secure it, individual freedom that in turn benefits all of society, all parties have been influenced by83 liberalism in some way. Political liberalism: classical liberalism 17th - 19th century (emerged in britain) For classical liberalism legitimate political rule starts from the principle of equality. This did not necessarily mean that everyone should have equal political rights (right to vote, hold office), but that the rule of law should apply equally to everyone. Government might be required, rule might be necessary, but only for specific purposes: to protect freedom, meaning life, liberty, possessions . John locke, purpose of state is to protect rights to life liberty and positions. Law should be applied equally to every one. Government is really only there for limited purposes.
