In some senses it is difficult to define conservatism as a theory. Basic conservative philosophy is more procedural more than substantive. Preserve tradition, wants a society built on tradition. Economic conservative: less gov. intervention, more individual freedom. Social conservatives: more gov. intervention on abortion and drug use. French revolution: society is futile, absolute monarch; wants to create a new society where every citizen is equal. Individuals do not live in isolation, their individual freedom; if not used in the right way, can destroy the arena of which freedom is possible. Burke suggests that the revolution will end in despotism. Predicts the french revolution will end up creating chaos and is dangerous. In fact revolutionary plans of any type are likely to end in violence and turmoil. We must consider society and what holds it together.
