Rational choice theory (recap of sept. 6, 2018) Political behaviour can be explained by examining choices of self-interested individuals. Individuals make their choices by assessing the costs and benefits, relative to the goals. When the benefits exceed the costs, you most likely make the choice to take part in it. Choices affected the institutional rules of the game. Tom would like to minimize overall travel time. Bus a takes 8 min. longer than bus b, but it comes more often. Tom gets to the bus stop just as bus a pulls up. He knows that bus b is scheduled to arrive in 3 min. Things like is the bus driver nice or mean. If i wait will traffic affect the next bus. Tom prefers the shorter travel time: waiting for 3 min to take bus b still gets tom to campus faster. There are four essential characteristics of a state which include population, territory, sovereignty, and government.
