Defining politics: mostly concerned with states: provides historical argument about how politics came to be specialized in the state, ends up defining the state as politics, and politics about the state. Why is state part of politics: because of its means violence, can be legitimately beat up if you were beat up by the police officer, politics is this domain that is defined by physical coerce being allowed. Defining the state: pg 33, when a state fails, it has bot ben successful in claiming monopoly over legitimate violence. Pg 34: legitimacy is key, very hard to sustain state through fear, have to get people to accept the rules. Why they would accept this rule: pg. 34: 1 of 3 reasons, 3 types of authority, 1. Traditional what people have always done: 2. Because that is where real politics is charisma tends to expre: you realize they are just another person, there constantly needs to be new sources of it.
