Weber also have base themes as to how these institutions are changing: a whole bunch of changes going on, but all the same kinds of change. He describes how things have been increasingly bureaucratized, specialized. Describes the collection of knowledge as increasingly rationalized, and increasingly dependent on technology. Sees technology and rationalization go together: institutions we interact are complicated, smarter the institutions become, the dumber people become because we cannot understand everything going on. 12: we don"t know how anything we own use, the smarter we get as civilization, the more we are surrounded by and dependent on things we don"t know, true of machines and institutions. What does it mean that we live in a collectively smarter but individually stupider world: pg. 13 the thesis is called the disenchantment thesis: the disenchantment of the world, disenchantment means the magic is taken out of everything. Medicine makes us better at extending life and preventing illness and death.
