PSYCH 1X03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Lewis Terman, Inductive Reasoning, Edwin Boring
Document Summary
Intelligence- the cognitive ability of an individual to learn from experience, reason well, remember important information and cope with the demands of daily living. Edwin boring provided the most straight forward de nition of intelligence: intelligence is whatever intelligence test measures. However, this de nition fails to capture important cognitive features of intelligence. Psychologists often make two assumptions: intelligence involves the ability top perform cognitive tasks and the capacity to learn from experience and adapt. Sternberg combined these two view points and formed this operational de nition that intelligence is cognitive ability of an individual to learn from experience, to reason well, to remember important info and to cope with the demands of daily living. Problem solving captures the elements of intelligence (operational de nition) . It allows for interpretation of a social situation, nding a solution to a dif cult problem and ingenuity. Two broad strategies used to solve problems are: deductive and inductive reasoning.
