Document Summary
Clinicians rely on set of important criteria when they assess or diagnose a psychological disorder. Most prominent themes in these criteria are the 4 ds: Deviance: refers to idea that thoughts, emotions & behaviors that we define as abnormal deviate from those deemed acceptable by society. Understand that practices of minority group aren"t labeled deviant bc they"re wrong, just bc they"re different - therefore we define abnormality by whether individual"s behaviour is accepted by the culture to which they belong. Both those who fall above or below norm are labelled deviant. Distress: negative feelings of individuals with psychological disorders, or feeling very troubled by illness. Not all disorders are accompanied by feelings of distress. Dysfunction: marked impairment in ability to perform everyday functions. Unable to engage in normal social or occupational functioning.
