Categorization- allows us to deal with our surroundings quickly and effectively. Main question in using categorization to assist in classification is what is it? . Two cognitive mechanisms: attention- helps focus finite mental resources on key parts of the active scene, memory- help recall specific thoughts and behaviours which are appropriate to current needs. Cognitive ability to put things in categories and concepts helps you to efficiently process the incoming data and make responses: decisions more efficient by your ability to quickly categorize incoming stimuli. Without cognitive ability- unable to draw connections with the past and make decisions. Categorization serves four basic specific functions: treating non-identical objects in a similar manner, ex. Apples appear differently by colour dimension, but classifying them all apples: ex. Picks up a tiger cub and cuddles with it the same way she does with her cat: tiger and cat- different things but assuming there the same and treating them the same, understanding our surrounding, ex.
